Documents from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) revealed the link to the collars, which excrete pesticide to hopefully keep pets pest-free for up to eight months without harming them. However, some pet owners have pointed to the collars as the reason their dogs have suffered from lethargy, loss of motor functions, skin problems, and seizures.

Tracey said something similar: Flea and tick collars "are generally regarded as safe preventatives for cats and dogs."
McGrath added that more than 25 million Seresto collars have protected dogs and cats from pests, and "reporting rates" about the collars have decreased over the collars' lifespan and Elanco "continuously monitors the safety of its products."

Pet Parents beware! Thanks to more than 86,000 incident reports, Seresto Flea and Tick collars have now been directly linked to more incidents of harm than any other product in the history of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Seresto flea and tick collars were designed to be an easy and convenient way for pet parents to protect their dogs and cats from harmful pests. Once placed around the pet's neck and activated, the flea collars work by slowly releasing two pesticides for up to eight months. The pesticides used by the collars, which are imidacloprid and flumethrin, are supposed to kill fleas and ticks without harming pets or the humans who love them. Unfortunately, this doesn't always seem to be the case.
Seresto collars were initially introduced to the pet supplies marketplace in 2012 by Bayer Animal Health, and have since been bought by Elanco Animal Health, which is the current maker of the flea collars. But from 2012 to 2020, the EPA has received more than 75,000 incident reports related to the collars, including almost 1,700 related pet deaths and nearly 1,000 incidents where humans were harmed due to contact with the Seresto flea collars. The Seresto flea and tick collars have been linked to causing seizures, skin irritation and rashes, neurological issues, and even death. Despite these incidents, the EPA has not yet issued any warnings to make pet owners aware of the risks associated with using the Seresto flea collars and there have been no recalls for the collars. Elanco Animal Health continues to insist that the collars are safe and effective.
That said, dogs who have been using this popular flea collar without incident and have not yet had an adverse reaction are not likely to have a problem now. If your dog has not experienced an adverse event while using the Seresto collar, some vets say it's okay to continue using the collars as usual. But if this recent news about the Seresto flea collar isn't sitting right with you, we recommend talking to your vet about changing your furry friend's flea medication to lower the risk of pet harm.
We categorized our search by orals/chews, topicals, collars, sprays, and shampoos. We dismissed sprays and shampoos because they offer protection for only days or a week at a time, and pet owners are more likely to misuse them compared with other products. That left us with eight brands of chews, topicals, and collars for cats or dogs. We selected the four brands that were highly recommended by our experts, that kill and protect against a wide range of pests, and that are sold across retailers at a variety of budgets.
Have you heard of Seresto collars? They're flea and tick collars for dogs and sound like the perfect alternatives to the chemicals we put on our dogs. When I first learned about them, I was interested, but didn't bother looking further because my dogs didn't wear collars and I didn't think they'd do well with these. Turns out that their penchant NOT to wear collars was a good thing because reports are now showing that Seresto flea and tick collars have been linked to over 75,000 injuries and nearly 1,700 pet deaths. There have even been injuries to humans linked to these collars.

Some members of Congress want the maker of Seresto products to temporarily remove them from store shelves. That request came after new federal records showed Seresto collars were named in thousands of incidents where pets were harmed.
Seresto Collar for dogs works with a distinctive polymer matrix composed of two substances, imidacloprid, and flumethrin. These ingredients get spread all over the dog's body surface. Imidacloprid controls flea infections, whereas Flumethrin kills and repels ticks. The composition gets released and spreads across the dog's skin in low concentrations for eight consecutive months and provides continuous protection against fleas and ticks.
Sold by famous manufacturer Bayer, this 2-pack of collars for large dogs (>18 pounds) is relatively expensive but quite effective for repelling pests. Each collar lasts for eight months, so this kit offers well over a year of continuous protection fleas and ticks.
The objective of this study was to determine the empirical efficacy of imidacloprid 10 %/flumethrin 4.5 % (Seresto) collars in preventing long-term transmission of Ehrlichia canis by infected Rhipicephalus sanguineus ticks to dogs. The study was a parallel group design, single centre, randomised, non-blinded, controlled, long-term efficacy study. The treatment group of 8 dogs was fitted with Seresto collars, the untreated control group of 8 dogs received no collars. Ehrlichia canis-infected ticks were released into the dogs sleeping quarters at 14-day intervals up to Day +378. Control group dogs infected with E. canis were continuously replaced to keep the control sample size constant, and a total of 39 control dogs were required. The final clinical examination and blood sampling occurred on Day +420. The primary assessment criterion was the number of dogs infected with E. canis, as confirmed by IFA and PCR, and the secondary criterion was the acaricidal efficacy based on tick counts. All scheduled blood samples taken were subject to analyses for both PCR and IFA, but only positive cases are discussed. Up to Day +378, none of the collar-treated dogs were infected with E. canis, whereas 34 of the 35 untreated dogs enrolled before Day +371 were infected. The acaricidal efficacy of the collar ranged from 90 % to 100 % for the duration of the assessment period.
Since its initial U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) registration in 2012, more than 25 million Seresto collars have protected dogs and cats in the U.S. from fleas and ticks. In that time period, the incident report rate for all adverse events related to Seresto in the U.S. has been below 0.3%. Furthermore, the significant majority of these incidents relate to non-serious effects, such as dermatologic application site issues. 041b061a72
