After initially making smartphones based mostly on Windows Mobile, HTC became a co-founding member of the Open Handset Alliance, a group of handset manufacturers and mobile network operators dedicated to the development of the Android operating system.[3] The HTC Dream (marketed by T-Mobile in many countries as the T-Mobile G1) was the first phone on the market to run Android.

Although initially successful as a smartphone vendor as it became the largest smartphone vendor in the U.S. in Q3 2011, competition from Samsung and Apple, among others, diluted its market share, which dropped to just 7.2% by April 2015, and the company has experienced consecutive net losses. In 2016, HTC began to diversify its business beyond smartphones, having partnered with Valve to produce a virtual reality platform known as HTC Vive. After having collaborated with Google on its Pixel smartphone, HTC sold roughly half of its design and research talent, as well as non-exclusive rights to smartphone-related intellectual property, to Google in 2017 for US$1.1 billion.

In July 2010, HTC announced it would begin selling HTC-branded smartphones in China in a partnership with China Mobile.[13] In October 2010, the HTC HD7 was released as one of the launch models of Microsoft's revitalised Windows Phone.[14] In 2010, HTC sold over 24.6 million handsets, up 111% over 2009.[15]

At the Mobile World Congress in February 2011, the GSM Association named HTC the "Device Manufacturer of the Year" in its Global Mobile Awards.[16] In April 2011, HTC surpassed Nokia as the third-largest smartphone manufacturer by market share, behind Apple and Samsung.[17]

The 2011 Best Global Brands rankings released by Interbrand, listed HTC at #98 and valued it at $3.6 billion.[22][23] Based on researcher Canalys, in Q3 2011 HTC Corporation became the largest smartphone vendor in the U.S. with 24 percent market share, ahead of Samsung's 21 percent, Apple's 20 percent and BlackBerry's 9 percent. HTC Corporation made different models for each operator.[24]

The HTC One was released in mid-2013 and, subsequently won various industry awards in the best smartphone and best design categories, but global sales of the HTC One were lower than those for Samsung's Galaxy S4 flagship handset and HTC recorded its first ever quarterly loss in early October 2013: a deficit of just under NT$3 billion (about US$100m, 62m). Marketing problems were identified by HTC as the primary reason for its comparative performance, a factor that had been previously cited by the company.[30]

During 2013, Microsoft was in negotiations to purchase HTC. This was revealed in 2018 by Risto Siilasmaa, chairman of Nokia, in an interview with the Helsingin Sanomat.[31] Microsoft would eventually purchase Nokia's mobile phone business that year.

On 1 March 2015, HTC unveiled Vive, a virtual reality head-mounted display in collaboration with Valve.[41] In June and October 2015, HTC reported net losses; the company has faced increased competition from other smartphone makers, including Apple, Samsung, and others, which had resulted in a decline in its smartphone sales, as well a major loss of market share.[42] Its smartphone market share had risen back to 7.2 percent in April 2015 due to its strong sales of recent devices, but HTC's stock price had fallen by 90 percent since 2011.[33]

In November 2016, HTC reported that it had sold at least 140,000 Vive units, and that each unit was being sold at a profit.[43] In January 2017, HTC unveiled its new U series smartphone line, the U Play and U Ultra; the company described the U series as a "new direction" for its phones, emphasizing an integrated virtual assistant developed by the company.[44] In February 2017, HTC reported that in the fourth quarter of 2016, its operating losses had decreased by 13% year-over-year, citing "robust sales performance" and sequential revenue increases throughout the year.[45]

On 21 September 2017, Google announced that it would acquire roughly half of the 4,000 employees who worked in HTC's design and research staff, and non-exclusive licences to smartphone-related intellectual property held by HTC, for US$1.1 billion. The employees included the team involved with Google's Pixel smartphone, which was manufactured by HTC. Google stated that the purchase was part of its efforts to bolster its first-party hardware business. The transaction was completed on 30 January 2018; while HTC will continue to produce its own smartphones, the company has stated that it planned to increase its focus on Internet of Things (IoT) and virtual reality going forward.[46][47][48]

In March 2010, Apple Inc. filed a complaint with the US International Trade Commission claiming infringement of 20 of its patents covering aspects of the iPhone user interface and hardware.[57] HTC disagreed with Apple's actions and reiterated its commitment to creating innovative smartphones.[58] HTC also filed a complaint against Apple for infringing on five of its patents and sought to ban the import of Apple products into the US from manufacturing facilities in Asia.[59][60] Apple expanded its original complaint by adding two more patents.[61]

In February 2013, HTC settled with the U.S. Federal Trade Commission concerning lax security on more than 18 million smartphones and tablets[63] it had shipped to customers[64] and agreed to security patches.[65]

HTC invested strongly in research and development, which accounts for a quarter of its employees.[4] The company's North American headquarters are located in Bellevue, Washington.[72] HTC runs a software design office in Seattle (near its North American headquarters) where it designs its own interface for its phones.[73] In 2011, HTC also opened a research and development office in Durham, North Carolina, a location the company chose over Seattle and Atlanta,[74] to focus on multiple areas of wireless technology.[75]

On 17 February 2010, Fast Company ranked HTC as the 31st most innovative company in the world.[76] On 27 May 2011, in response to customer feedback, HTC announced that they will no longer lock the bootloaders on their Android-based phones.[77]

In 2012, HTC became the official smartphone sponsor of the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League.[79] HTC also became the shirt sponsors for the Indian Super League franchise NorthEast United for the 2014, 2015 and 2016 season.[80]

HTC is a Taiwanese electronics manufacturer that makes smartphones and other smart devices. Since the company's founding more than 20 years ago, they have created a range of smartphones. These HTC smartphones include the HTC One and HTC Evo.

HTC works with most major carriers. It is important to note that unlocked phones may still need to be registered with your carrier. You should always check with your carrier first to be sure they allow you to bring your own phone. The carriers that have HTC phones include Sprint, AT&T, MetroPCS, TracFone, Helio, Verizon, and Opus.

HTC has been manufacturing devices like cell phones for several years; sometimes, releasing devices under other names. For example, HTC also helped to make the Google Pixel. Most HTC smartphones consist of two words: HTC followed by a model code, such as One or U.

Most HTC smartphones come with internal memory and a microSD slot for additional memory. If you see a 32GB phone, this refers to the internal memory. HTC has made a wide range of memory options available depending on your needs and on the model. More compact models come with 1GB, 4GB, and 8GB. Standard-sized smartphones generally include 16GB, 32GB, 64GB, and 128GB. Note that these sizes do not include SD card memory.

Data can be stored several ways on HTC phones. Each phone has internal storage. Some models also include microSD cards that are able to provide additional storage purposes. These cards can be added or removed in order to add, transfer, and store data. Depending on your wireless provider, there is also the potential for cloud storage. Cloud storage is an off-site space where you store content on the internet.

Most HTC phones come in a few colors, such as red, gray, silver, and sometimes gold. In addition to these base colors, some models, such as the HTC U11 and HTC One, come with a broader range of color options including red and blue.

"Think of it as a micro OS that runs in parallel with Android," Phil Chen, HTC's decentralized chief officer, told CNBC over the phone. "It basically is a wallet, but the wallet, what it does is hold your private keys." Private keys are lines of code which are meant to be known only to the owner of a cryptocurrency to allow them access to their funds.

Chen said the benefit of keeping this area of the phone separate from Android was that Google's OS is "fundamentally insecure with a centralized system," and therefore storing cryptocurrency using Android would make a user's funds more vulnerable to a hack.

He said the significance of integrating blockchain technology in the phone is that it bolsters the security and privacy of a user's assets, and will in the future help with protecting a customer's data and identity. Blockchain can be thought of as a tamper-proof digital ledger that records cryptocurrency transactions and other data across a distributed network with no central authority overseeing it.

"And the reason why you do a blockchain phone is ... for everybody just to own their own keys. Everything starts there. When you start owning your own keys, then you can start owning your own digital identity, then you can start to own data."

HTC's new phone will run decentralized applications, digital programs that operate on the blockchain. It also comes with a "Social Key Recovery" function that lets a user regain access to their funds if they lose their private key via a select number of trusted contacts. 041b061a72
